Heat the olive oil in a heavy large skillet over medium heat. Add the sausages and cook until browned on both sides, about 7 to 10 minutes. Remove from the pan and drain.

Keeping the skillet over medium heat, add Italian seasoning, chopped basil, and garlic. Cook for 2 minutes until fragrant.

Stir in the Marsala wine, diced tomatoes, tomato paste, and red pepper flakes (if using). Mix well to combine.

Add the bell peppers, onions, salt, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer.

Return the sausages to the skillet with the vegetable mixture. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 15 minutes, or until the sauce thickens.

Serve over mashed potatoes, pasta, polenta, cauliflower rice, or as a sandwich in hollowed-out hoagie rolls.
